NU-WRF Version 7 "Arthur" Patch 6: v7lis7-3.5.1-p6

The sixth stable patch to NU-WRF Version 7 (v7lis7-3.5.1-p6) was released on 11 January 2016.  This will probably be the last version of NU-WRF based on WRF 3.5.1.

WHAT CHANGED

  • WRF-LIS coupling updates:
    • Enables coupling to Noah 2.7.1, Noah 3.2, and Noah 3.6.  Includes fixes to Noah 2.7.1 and Noah 3.2 export code to handle patches, adds export for Noah 3.6, and adds output support for all three LSMs.
    • Now passing pure LWDOWN (w/o multiplying by surface emissivity) from WRF to LIS.
    • Changed Noah 2.7.1 to multiply LWDOWN by emissivity internally (already done with newer Noah versions).
    • Now copying LIS exported emissivity back to WRF array for input to radiation.
  • Added the capability for CASA2WRF to temporally interpolate the CO2 flux depending on NU-WRF state.
    • This program reads the component CO2 fluxes, interpolate to WRF grid
    • Read the WRF output from NU-WRF
    • Interpolate the CO2 flux components based on Shortwave radiation, and Surface Temperature from NU-WRF state, and compute the net production of CO2, compute the total flux and its tendency
    • Create input flux files for WRFCHEM runs with CASACO2
  • Updated User Guide

WHAT IS MISSING

  • EDA package. This will be ported to Discover and then bundled with Arthur Patch 6 shortly.
  • LIS 7.1rp1.  Not released yet. This will be put into the future NU-WRF Version 8 (Bjerknes).

KNOWN BUGS

  • Grell-Freitas cumulus scheme (cu_physics=3) sensitive to CPU count. Use G3 (cu_physics=5) instead.
  • Run-time problems with Very Large Grids (e.g., 5000x5000x50). This is being addressed.
  • 1-way nesting changes answer in parent grid for different CPU counts. This hopefully is fixed in WRF 3.7.1.
  • CASA2WRF not using netCDF4 compression in output.
  • Intel MPI hangs on Discover for large (> 2000 cpu) jobs; use SGI MPT instead.
